Chommy Programme
Shaping Bright Futures: Equipping Young Adolescents with the Choices, Confidence, and Community Support to Thrive
At Yizani Sakhe Organisation, we understand that early adolescence—specifically between the ages of 10 and 14—is a profound period of physical, emotional, and social transition. The Chommy Programme is an innovative, school-based social behavior change initiative meticulously structured to meet the needs of young adolescents during this pivotal crossroads.
Operating directly within the familiar environment of local schools, this program focuses on building proactive resilience, healthy self-awareness, and critical life skills. By teaching young people to carefully consider the long-term consequences of their daily choices, the Chommy Programme actively protects their health, preserves their educational journeys, and sets them on a stable path toward a fulfilling adulthood.
Core Focus Areas and Educational Modules
Led by four highly trained, empathetic facilitators, the Chommy curriculum delivers age-appropriate, interactive modules that address the critical realities facing today’s youth:
- Navigating Peer Pressure and Social Dynamics: We provide practical strategies and assertive communication tools that empower young people to resist negative peer influences, make independent choices, and stand firm in their personal values.
- Comprehensive Adolescent Health and Hygiene: The program places a strong, respectful emphasis on the physical transformations of puberty. Participants learn the vital importance of personal hygiene and body ownership, demystifying the changes of young adulthood.
- Mitigating Risky Behaviors and Preserving Education: Through engaging, cause-and-effect learning modules, facilitators open honest dialogues about the realities of early sexual activity. By focusing on prevention, the program works systematically to reduce the incidence of:
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
- Teenage Pregnancies
- School Dropouts
- Cultivating Identity, Self-Esteem, and Cultural Acceptance: We guide students through identity-building exercises that celebrate personal worth, foster a positive self-image, and promote a deep, respectful acceptance of their diverse cultural backgrounds.
A Holistic Ecosystem: Schools, Parents, and Social Support
True behavioral change cannot happen in isolation. The Chommy Programme stands out because it deploys a 360-degree, holistic approach that unites the classroom, the home, and professional social services:
- Targeted School Interventions: The program runs structured, three-weekly sessions across six selected primary and high schools in the Gugulethu community, intentionally targeting specific grades to maximize developmental impact.
- Early Identification and Referral Networks: Beyond group education, our trained facilitators act as a vital frontline defense. By closely monitoring sessions, they identify at-risk youth or sensitive cases that require deeper care, seamlessly referring them to professional social workers for specialized, one-on-one assistance.
- Parental Empowerment and Family Alignment: As Yizani Sakhe, we firmly believe that a stable home anchors a stable child. We run parallel initiatives that equip parents with the practical communication skills, tools, and knowledge needed to tackle modern parenting challenges, enabling families to co-create a nurturing, highly supportive domestic environment.
Programme Impact and Community Outcomes
Through this beautifully coordinated network of schools, families, and social workers, the Chommy Programme builds a protective ecosystem where young people can truly reach their full potential:
- Informed, Proactive Decision-Making: Participants exit the program with a mature understanding of accountability, showing an increased capability to evaluate risks and avoid peer-driven vulnerabilities.
- Restored Dignity and Health Awareness: Breaking down the taboos around adolescent hygiene builds protective self-respect, giving young people confidence in their changing bodies.
- Stronger Family Bonds: By bridging the communication gap between parents and children, the program builds open, resilient households capable of navigating adolescent challenges together.
